MMGI BRAND BILLBOARD PHILIPPINES

MMGI BRAND BILLBOARD PHILIPPINES

Connecting Filipino Music and the World

From its first issue in 1890, the Billboard brand evolved into the definitive authority in global music it is today. From its iconic charts to its influence on cultural discourse, the brand occupies a central place where artistry, fandom, and industry converge. As it expanded its global footprint—with editions in China, Japan, Argentina, Vietnam, Italy, and Georgia—it welcomed the Philippines as its seventh edition in October 2023.

Launched under Modern Media Group Inc. through a licensing agreement with Penske Media Corporation, Billboard Philippines marked a pivotal moment for the country’s music landscape. It addressed a longstanding gap in local media by creating a platform dedicated to amplifying Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and reflecting the nation’s rich sonic identity.

From the outset, the editorial approach championed a wide range of genres—highlighting the textured storytelling of Pinoy folk-pop, the spirited rhythm of novelty tracks, the urgency of Filipino rock, and the evolving pulse of urban OPM. Beyond reflecting this diversity, Billboard Philippines helped shape it through collectible print editions, digital features, live performances, artist collaborations, and podcasts.

For its launch, Billboard Philippines assembled a bold pioneer editorial team:

Bret Jackson, Editor‑in‑Chief, brought both editorial acumen and cultural insight to the role. As co‑founder of indie label Paraisla and production house 7640, and having lived across the Philippines since age 13, he treated OPM as both a personal passion and a scholarly pursuit—driving a depth of coverage that resonated across the country.

Francis Reyes, Editor‑at‑Large, infused the publication with both legacy and innovation. Drawing on decades as guitarist for The Dawn, NU 107 DJ, and musical director, his presence bridged the rich history of Filipino rock with the pulsating modern music scene, ensuring the editorial direction remained rooted yet forward-looking.

Paolo Valenciano, Executive Producer, shaped the brand’s live and audiovisual identity. With a résumé that included directing landmark concerts and music events, he brought cinematic scope and professional rigor, transforming artist appearances into immersive experiences that matched international standards.

Anton Molina, Podcast Producer, translated artist narratives into compelling audio journeys. Leveraging over a decade of radio and audio‑production experience, he crafted rich, immersive podcast content—extending Billboard Philippines’ storytelling beyond print and digital into the realm of sound.

Meet the Editor-in-Chief

Bret Jackson, Editor‑in‑Chief

Under Bret Jackson’s leadership as Editor-in-Chief, Billboard Philippines continues to solidify its position as a credible force in the local music industry. His editorial approach prioritizes impartiality and inclusivity, ensuring that artists from all genres and backgrounds are represented with integrity. He has shaped the brand’s cultural presence through landmark moments, including its high-profile launch featuring SB19 and Regine Velasquez, and has expanded its reach through dynamic media platforms—Soundwave, Studios, and Volumes—establishing Billboard Philippines as a multi-format authority on OPM.

Where Legacy Meets Innovation

Billboard Philippines made its highly anticipated return on October 15, 2023, with a commanding debut issue that placed two icons of OPM at the forefront: SB19, hailed as the kings of P-pop, and Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Asia’s Songbird. The dual-cover release sent a clear message—the new era of Billboard would honor the past while championing the future.

The issue struck an immediate chord with audiences. Retail copies sold out swiftly, and demand for the collector’s box set, which featured individual member covers of SB19, signaled the arrival of a true cultural collectible. A special “Pop Issue” edition added to its appeal, reinforcing the magazine’s role as both tastemaker and timekeeper in Philippine music.

More than a launch, it was a statement. The debut sparked conversation, earned widespread media attention, and solidified SB19’s growing global presence. For Regine, the cover served as a tribute to a career that helped shape the very foundations of OPM. The launch event at Whitespace Makati drew industry leaders and devoted fans alike—marking the beginning of a new chapter where Filipino music takes center stage, on its own terms.
